Introduction: NVR Types

NVR Components

Non-Verbal Reasoning is all about pattern recognition and there are many components that can create these patterns.

Components of NVR:

  • Lines– solid, dotted, curves, thick, thin, straight, dashed.
  • 2-D Shapes– circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, trapezium, kite, polygons,
    rhombus etc.
  • Irregular Shapes– stars, shields, heart, bulb, arrows, chevron, helmet, bulb,
    shoes etc.
  • 3-D Shapes– cubes, cuboids, tetrahedrons, cylinders, pyramids, cones, prisms
    etc.
  • Fills– dotted, shaded, hatched, liquid, block, colours etc.

Cube from Net: SR Type 13

Make Cube from Net

In the NVR/SR Types 10, 11 and 12, we studied nets of a cube in full details. In this section, we shall be focusing on whether a given net of a  cube can form a given cube. The six faces of the net will normally have different patterns or images. The question is to determine whether the net will make an exact cube with the same faces when folded.

Background Knowledge

In order to understand how to solve this type of Spatial Reasoning problems, the following knowledge must be recalled:

  • Ability to identify the 11 nets of a cube (SR Type 10)
  • Ability to identify the opposite faces of a cube (SR Type 11)
  • Ability to identify the touching edges of a cube (SR Type 12)

All of the above knowledge will be used to solve SR Type 13 problems. If you have forgotten these skills, it is advisable to go back to these lessons to refresh your memory.

Method of Solving SR Type 13 Problem

The best method of approaching the problem is:

  • Look at the given options and first cross out any obvious wrong choices
  •  Since two opposite faces of a cube cannot be seen, cross out any answer showing two visible opposite faces
  •  Cross out any answer where the edges are not supposed to touch according to the net
  • Cross out any answer that has the wrong image or pattern
  • Cross out any answer where the edges are not touching on the net but touching on the cube
  • Cross out any answer where the edges are touching on the net but not touching on the cube

Example 1

You are given a net followed by four cubes. Select which of the cubes can be made from the net

NVR Type 13 question

Solution:

  • Option B is ruled out since the star is opposite the three horizontal lines and therefore cannot be both visible
  • Option A is ruled out since the black dots are opposite to each other and therefore cannot be both visible
  • Option D is ruled out since there is no black triangle on the  net
  • Therefore, the correct answer is C

Answer: C

Example 2

You are given a net followed by four cubes. Select which of the cubes can be made from the net

NVR Type 13 question

Solution:

  • Option D is ruled out since the 2 is opposite the black and white flag and therefore cannot be both visible
  • Option A is ruled out since the five dots is opposite to gray square and therefore cannot be both visible
  • Option B is ruled out since there are no two lots of 2 faces on the  net
  • Therefore, the correct answer is C

Answer: C
